Desalinated Water

Oceanlinx wave energy converters have the potential to produce fresh water by generating high pressure sea water and converting it via a reverse osmosis (RO) system



In a typical conventional RO onshore plants a large amount of sea water is pumped onshore and only 1/3 of the total sea water pumped to shore is converted into fresh water, with the remaining 2/3 returned offshore as concentrated brine.  A major advantage of our wave energy converters is that 100% of the water pumped ashore is fresh water, with the brine released around the device and helped to mix with sea water through local waves, currents, wind and special outlets on the device. As a result of this, significant energy savings can be made when compared to conventional RO systems.

Another advantage of the Oceanlinx wave energy converters is that rather than having one extensive desalination facility onshore, multiple devices can be spread along the coast to provide and support fresh water supply tailored to the needs of coastal communities.

By using a single Oceanlinx device for desalination, coupled with the provision of power from the grid to balance the energy supply during wave down-times there is the potential to provide 3million litres of potable water per day, which would cover the needs of approximately 3,500 households.
